Thoughts About Inside Job

Welcome, to The GFC Product Reviews.

Thoughts About Inside Job

1 – Overview -

Name: Inside Job

Website Url: http://www.sonyclassics.com/insidejob/

Source: Charles Ferguson

Company: PBS

Created: 2010

1) Here is a summary of Inside Job.

2) Inside Job documents the chain of causes leading to the chaos of the global financial crisis in 2008. Around 2008, a wildfire of bankruptcies, foreclosures, and unemployment spread from the United States around the globe as major companies in the global financial services industry crashed and burned.

3) Beginning with the 1970s, Inside Job covers a series of changes in the financial services industry and its relation to the government, continuing through to the GFC of 2008. There are two main themes in the GFC – (1) financial deregulation by the industry and the government and (2) taking $uicidal bets for short-term profits.

4) A prime example of the two themes of deregulation and bad bets is 'the securitization food chain'. In a word, the food chain was a system that allowed agencies in the financial services sector to make wildly risky loans and bets and pass these bets along the chain.

By passing the bets along the chain, the agency could earn a commission and relieve themselves of risk. Since there were two incentives for passing along wild bets, agencies were making as many wild bets as possible and earning wild commissions.

5) Since the loans and bets were risky and likely to default, when it came time for the loans to be repaid and the bets to mature – the system collapsed because hardly anyone actually had the money to cover these bets.

Further, the leaders of the GFC were able to take a percentage of the losses and walk away from a mass of bankruptcies, foreclosures, and unemployment – with more wealth and more power than they had before the GFC.

6) In conclusion, Inside Job shows how the financial services industry and government have been combining their efforts to dupe and bet the global financial system into crisis, while earning incredible profits.

Now for my thoughts about Inside Job.

2 – Pros and Cons of Inside Job -

7) Cons:

1. Too commercial.

Although Inside Job has engaging background music, it also has out-of-date, pop music. The pop music can give Inside Job the feel of a tv sitcom. Also, Matt Damon, a well-known film star, is narrating Inside Job, which can remove a degree of the serious, down-to-earth feel of the typical documentary – shading the film as more of a movie than a documentation.

2. Not enough emphasis on the role of government.

Inside Job focuses mainly on the role that the financial services industry plays in the GFC, touching on the role of government much less. They have formed a team and the role of government may actually be greater than that of the financial services industry, because the government is the gate-keeper, by comparison.

8) Pros:

1. Visually appealing.

Inside Job begins with a several panoramic views of lush, green hills and vibrant, natural scenery in Iceland. There are also sharp views of New York City throughout the film.

2. Engaging interviews.

Many people see one of the key points of a successful documentary to be the dialogue, and the powerful points this dialogue reveals. Inside Job has powerful, revealing, and often comical interviews and dialogues.

These are my thoughts about Inside Job.

3 – Conclusion -

9) In summation, Inside Job is a documentary by Charles Ferguson about the global financial crisis. Inside Job shows how the financial services industry and the government have been combining their efforts in taking wildly risking bets, earning massive profits, and causing the GFC.

The cons of Inside Job are that (1) it is too commercial and (2) it does not place enough focus on the role of government in causing the GFC.

The pros of Inside Job are that (1) it is visually appealing and (2) it features engaging interviews.

These are my thoughts about Inside Job.

10) You are likely to find Inside Job educational and entertaining, particularly if you appreciate appealing visuals and engaging interviews.
